The EMN Bulletin provides policymakers and other practitioners with updates on recent migration and international protection policy developments at EU and national level. The 24th edition provides information from July 2018 to September 2018, including the (latest) relevant published statistics.

This edition also includes a special note on new proposals in the fields of migration and external action announced by the European Commission in the 2018 State of the Union speech.

Information is also provided on national developments in EU member states. Links are provided to the following key EU developments: 

  • European Commission provided further emergency assistance to Greece and Spain to respond to the migratory pressure
  • Pew Research Centre survey finds majority of European citizens are positive towards receiving refugees from countries where there is war and violence and dissaporve of way EU is dealing with refugee issue
  • Eurostat published its quarterly report on asylum. The first-time asylum applicants in the EU decreased by 12% in the second quarter of 2018 compared with the same quarter of 2017. 
  • EU agreement with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and an agreement with Serbia on operational cooperation.
  • European Commission announced the expansion of two concepts: control centres and regional disembarkation arrangements
  • Eurobarometer survey “EU citizens and development cooperation”, published in September, revealed that seven out of ten European citizens consider financial aid for developing countries as an effective way to address irregular migration
  • Recent judgments of the European Court of Justice
