Eurostat figures show that the number of asylum applicants in EU28 increased by 29% in the first quarter of 2014

The latest Eurostat release shows an increase in asylum applications in EU28 to 108,300 for the first quarter of 2014 (Q1 2014) compared with 87,575 for the same quarter of 2013.  Out of the 108,300 asylum applicants, 95,440 (88%) were first time applicants.

  • The top 5 citizenships of asylum seekers in EU28 for Q1 2014 were:
    • Syria:16,770 (15% of overall applicants)
    • Afghanistan: 7,895 (7%)
    • Serbia: 5,960 (6%)
    • Pakistan: 5,055 (5%)
    • Russia: 4,695 (4%)
  • The largest numbers of asylum seekers were recorded in:
    • Germany: 36,890
    • France: 15,885
    • Sweden: 12,945
    • Italy:10,700

Key findings for Ireland:-

  • Ireland received 290 asylum applications in the first quarter of 2014 (Q1 2014), an increase of 65 compared with same quarter of 2013.
  • 70 positive decisions on asylum applications were made in Q1 2014 of which
    • 30 related to refugee status
    • 40 concerned subsidiary protection status
  • The main countries of citizenship of applicants for Q1 2014 were:
    • Pakistan: 35 (11% of overall applicants)
    • Nigeria: 30 (10%)
    • Zimbabwe: 20 (8%)
    • Albania: 20 (7%)
    • Algeria: 15 (6%)
