The EMN will launch today (26 April) its Annual Report on Migration and Asylum 2016 at an event in Brussels. This event will bring together a range of experts on migration and asylum to offer a unique overview perspective on emerging challenges and opportunities, through constructive and stimulating dialogue.
The Annual Report on Migration and Asylum presents an overview of the most recent EU and national policy developments in Member States during 2016 and early 2017, capturing the latest trends and analysis.
The year 2016 saw the migrant crisis dominate headlines once again as Europe continued to be faced with significant arrivals of migrants and refugees. According to Eurostat, over 1.2 million asylum applications were lodged in the EU in 2016, more than double compared to 2014.
However responding to refugees is just part of the range of challenges and opportunities involved in migration management. As well as having a credible policy to handle migration flows, Europe must continue to attract the talent and entrepreneurship of students, researchers and workers.
The launch event will focus on:
- International protection and asylum;
- Irregular migration; and
- Legal migration.
