European Commission Communication on Migration
Date Published: 12-05-2011
On 12 May 2011, the European Commission Communication on Migration COM(2011) 248 was presented to an extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting. Comprising of initiatives for a more ‘structured, comprehensive, rapid-response approach from the EU to the challenges and opportunities of migration’, the Commission Communication covers various aspects of migration such as:
- Completion of the Common European Asylum System by 2012
- Strengthened border control and Schengen governance to address irregular migration
- Better targeted legal migration into the EU
- Sharing of best practices in Member States’ approaches to the integration of legal immigrants in the EU
- A strategic approach for relations with third countries on migration.
These initiatives come in addition to the urgent short-term measures already taken by the Commission to deal with the migration situation in the Mediterranean.
A migration-focused discussion will take place at the European Council on 24 June 2011 and will be followed by flanking initiatives in the coming weeks and months, notably a migration 'package' to be submitted to the College for adoption on 24 May 2011.
