Preliminary census figures report that there continued to be a strong net inward migration, measured at 118,650 over the period 2006-2011.
The pattern of migration is “markedly different” from the previous census period (2002-2006). While high net inward migration was experienced in the early years of 2006-2011, it was followed by net outward migration in the second half of the census period, resulting in an average annual inward migration rate of 23,730 less than half that experienced in the period 2002-2006 (47,832).
