Eurostat release on asylum applicants and first instance decisions on asylum applications for second quarter 2011

Asylum applicants in EU-27 increased by nearly 25% in the second quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter of 2010.
The number of people seeking international protection in EU-27 was nearly 69,000 in the second quarter of 2011. This represents an increase of approximately 12,800 compared with the second quarter of 2010.
The largest numbers of asylum applications were received in France (14,505), Germany (10,820) and Belgium (7,160) amounting to nearly half of all applications received in EU27.
Ireland and Slovakia experienced the biggest percentage decreases with approximately 40% fewer applicants received in each country in comparison with the same quarter of 2010.
