Eurostat figures show that EU27 Member states granted protection to 84,100 asylum seekers in 2011

The latest Eurostat release shows an increase in asylum seekers granted protection in EU27 to 84,100 in 2011, compared with 75,800 in 2010.  42,700 people were granted refugee status, while 29,400 were granted subsidiary protection and 12,000 were granted leave to stay on humanitarian grounds.  A further 4,100 were received by EU27 member states as resettled refugees.

Overall, in 2011 the largest countries of citizenship of applicants granted protection status in the EU27 were Afghanistan (13,300), Iraq (9,000) and Somalia (8,900).

The largest numbers of applicants granted protection status were registered in the United Kingdom (14,400), Germany (13,000), France (10,700), Sweden (10,600), the Netherlands (8,400) and Italy (7,500).

Key findings for Ireland:-

  • 150 positive decisions on asylum applications were made in 2011 of which 135 were granted refugee status and 15 granted subsidiary protection45 persons were received as resettled refugees.
  • The main countries of citizenship of applicants granted protection were Afghanistan (20 or 12% of the total number of persons granted protection in this country), Pakistan (20 or 12%), and Iran (15 or 11.3%).
