Recent Eurostat release shows that across Europe on average one in 12 married persons was in a mixed marriage in the period 2008 - 2010

Switzerland and Latvia had the highest percentages of mixed married couples among all married couples out of the 30 European countries surveyed [1], with approximately one mixed married couple in every five. Mixed marriage is defined as one in which one partner is native-born and the other was born abroad. Poland, Bulgaria and Romania had the smallest percentage of mixed marriages with almost no mixed married couples in Romania.
Key findings for Ireland
- Ireland ranked seventh from top of the 30 countries surveyed, with approximately 12% mixed married couples out of total married couples in period 2008 – 2010. This figure is well above the recorded average of 6%.
