Launch of joint visa initiative between Ireland and the United Kingdom

Date Published: 17-06-2014

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, T.D., announced the launch of the ‘British Irish Visa Scheme’ between Ireland and the United Kingdom which will commence in Autumn.

The British Irish Visa Scheme will allow for travel to and around the Common Travel Area (CTA) on a single visa. Currently tourists and business visitors need separate Irish and UK visas in order to visit the two States. The scheme will be opened first to Chinese and Indian visitors.

A further rollout of the Visa Scheme to other countries, facilitating travel on a single visa within the Common Travel Area (CTA) will be agreed between the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service of the Department of Justice and Equality and the UK Home Office.
