Extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council to discuss Europe's response to migration crisis

Date Published: 01-09-2015

The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union has called an extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council on 14 September 2015 in Brussels.

The meeting will bring together Justice and Home Affairs Ministers from EU Member States to discuss the on-going migration crisis, to assess the situation on the ground, to look at international cooperation, investigation and measures to prevent trafficking of migrants, and return policy.

Increased flows of migrants mean that EU asylum and migration policies are coming under intense pressure. Media reports* indicate instances of visa checks on non-EU migrants being lifted, while in other cases border checks have been introduced within the Schengen zone in an attempt to prevent smuggling and trafficking of migrants.

Germany and France are among Member States calling for an urgent, coordinated EU response to the crisis.
