New ESRI Bulletin on Discrimination in the Labour Market: Nationality, Ethnicity and the Recession

07 May 2015

This ESRI Bulletin examines the extent to which discrimination varies across different national-ethnic groups in Ireland, and asks whether discrimination increased between 2004 and 2010.

Key findings:

  • Overall, non-Irish nationals do experience higher rates of work-based discrimination.
  • There is substantial variation in discrimination across national-ethnic groups.
  • In looking for work, ethnicity is particularly important, the research found that Black Africans and EU nationals of minority ethnicity were particularly likely to report experience of discrimination when looking for a job.
  • There is no evidence to suggest that self-reported discrimination increased during the recent recession.
