The Audit is a stock-take of existing legal protections for children in Ireland as well as an overview of the gaps that remain in the recognition of their rights, including in the area of immigration and asylum. It has a strong focus on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the European Convention on Human Rights and the Constitution, and recommendations are made to further strengthen children’s rights taking account of jurisprudence and practice. Proposals for reform provide a concrete foundation for law makers, policymakers, government and advocates to legislate and litigate effectively for the protection of children’s rights in Ireland.
Chapter 8 considers children in the context of the protection status determination process, family reunification and deportation.
