The Equality Act 2004 was enacted in July 2004 and has the effect of implementing three EU Directives: the Race Directive (2000/43/EC), the Framework Employment Directive (2000/78/EC) and the Revised Gender Equal Treatment Directive (2002/73/EC). It also provides for a number of procedural amendments to the Employment Equality Act 1998 and the Equal Status Act 2000. The Equality Act extended equality legislation to domestic workers, self-employed people and persons over 65 years of age.
