Eurostat figures show a 65 per cent annual increase in asylum applications in EU-28

Eurostat figures show 413, 800 asylum applications were registered in the EU-28 during the third quarter of 2015.  This was an increase of 250,400 compared with the same period in 2014 when 163,400 applications were registered.

The largest numbers of applicants (July – September 2015) were registered in:

  • Germany: 108,308 (26%)
  • Hungary: 108,085 (25%)
  • Sweden: 42,520 (10%)
  • Italy: 28,395 (7%)
  • Austria: 27,600 (7%)

For the period July to September 2015, the figures show that asylum applications registered in Ireland was 1,025.

Citizens of 149 countries sought asylum for the first time in the EU-28 in the third quarter of 2015.

The five main citizenships of asylum applications during the third quarter 2015 were:

  • Syrians: 138,000 (33%)
  • Afghanis: 56,700 (14%)
  • Iraqis: 44, 400 (11%)
  • Albanian: 26,485 (6%)
  • Pakistani : 21,240 (5%)
