Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, welcomed on Wednesday 17th June the arrival in Dublin of eight young people from a refugee camp in Greece.
Separated from their families, the eight young people are coming to Ireland under the International Refugee Protection Programme (IRPP), managed by the Department of Justice and Equality.
Upon arrival, the young people will be taken into the care of Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, who led a mission to Athens back in September 2019 which initiated preparations for the transfer. During this mission, the eight young people were assessed, screened and approved for resettlement.
Their arrival to Ireland was originally expected in late March. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the temporary suspension of all refugee transport and resettlement programmes, the transfer was not completed.
