A total of 4,400 new Irish citizens have been naturalised so far this year since the temporary statutory declaration process opened in January 2021.
The new temporary system enables applicants to complete their naturalisation process by signing a statutory declaration of loyalty. It has been in place since 18 January 2021. The declaration replaces the requirement for citizenship applicants to attend citizenship ceremonies which have been temporarily suspended during COVID-19.
On 27 July, the Department of Justice hosted its second virtual celebration event to welcome 1,000 people who recently received their Irish citizenship.
By the end of June 2021, 6,500 people had the opportunity to complete their Irish citizenship.
In-person ceremonies have been provisionally scheduled to resume in December 2021
