On Monday 25 September 2023 the Central Statistics Office released their annual Population and Migration Estimates report. The figures in this report are calculated by using the usually resident 2022 data from the Census of Population as a baseline. According to the report, immigration is at a 16-year high with 141,600 individuals establishing residence in the state over the last 12 months. Emigration also continues to increase to a five-year high of over 64,000 individuals who have ceased to usually reside in the state over the last 12 months.
A population rise of 97,000 people over the last 12 months marks the largest increase since 2008. This is a 25% increase from the 77,800 reported in 2022 but remains lower than 2007’s net migration figure of 104,800. There was a natural increase of 20,000 people in the State comprised of 55,500 births and 35,500 deaths.
Of the 141,600 immigrants, 29,600 were returning Irish citizens, 26,100 were other EU citizens, 4,800 were UK citizens, and 81,100 were citizens of other countries (including almost 42,000 Ukrainians).
