Only 20% of the 127,048 non-Irish nationals aged 15 and over who were assigned personal public service numbers (PPSNs) in 2008 had employment activity at any time during 2013 ; 18% of the total PPSN allocations from 2008 recorded social welfare activity during 2013. [1]
The figures show:
- Overall, PPSN allocations to non-Irish nationals across all age groups increased by 17% to 85,170 in 2013 from 72,947 in 2012.
- During 2013, 28,902 (38%) of non-Irish nationals with new PPSNs had employment activity.
- Of the 320,246 non-Irish nationals allocated PPSNs between 2002 and 2013, the majority were employed in five broad economic activities:
* Accommodation and food service activities (18%)
* Wholesale and retail trade (16%)
* Administrative and support service activities (13%)
* Manufacturing (11%)
* Human health and social work activities (7%).
- Of the 85,170 non-Irish nationals allocated a PPSN in 2013 the top 5 nationalities were:
* UK (15%)
* Poland (11%)
* Romania (9%)
* Brazil (7%)
* Spain (6%).
- During 2013, 22,573 (18%) of 127,048 PPSNs allocated in 2008 recorded social welfare activity, a slight increase compared to 2012 new allocations of 22,307 (17.6%).
- Referring to 2008 allocations the nationality group with the largest percentage showing social welfare activity in 2013 was the EU15 to EU25 states with 11,224 (22%) of the 50,341 allocations.
