European Commission launches: “Towards a Comprehensive European Migration Policy”
The European Commission has launched a fact sheet on its work towards a new European Agenda on Migration. An orientation debate on key actions deemed necessary to advance existing efforts in managing migration in the EU, has taken place within the College of Commissioners.
The orientation debate covered four main areas, in which it was stated that actions are envisaged to implement the political guidelines of President Juncker:
Implementation of a strong Common Asylum System, including making progress in the increased use of relocation and resettlement efforts by the European Union.
A new European policy on legal migration, which is envisaged as a long-term effort to attract the type of workers that will increase Europe’s competiveness globally.
Fighting irregular migration and human trafficking more robustly by taking enhanced actions, including the development of concrete tools targeting priority countries and routes, in collaboration with third countries.
Securing Europe’s external borders involving improved management of the external borders, in full respect of fundamental rights.
