Eurostat figures show 149,000 first time asylum seekers applied for international protection in the EU-28 during the second quarter of 2017 down by 11 per cent when compared with the first quarter of 2017 (when 165,000 first time applicants were registered).
The largest numbers of first time applicants in the EU-28 (from April to June 2017), were recorded in:
- Germany: 42,000 (28% of overall applicants)
- Italy: 34,200 (23%)
- France: 21,200 (14%)
- Greece: 10,600 (7%)
- United Kingdom: 7,700 (5%)
The five main countries of citizenship of asylum applicants during the second quarter of 2017 were:
- Syria: 21,120 (14%)
- Nigeria: 9,775 (7%)
- Afghanistan: 9,695 (7%)
- Iraq: 9,265 (6%)
- Pakistan: 7,270 (5%)
Key figures for Ireland
Ireland received 675 first time asylum applications from April to June 2017 compared to 600 in first quarter of 2017.
The main countries of citizenship of applicants in Ireland were:
- Georgia: 130 (19%)
- Syria: 95 (14%)
- Zimbabwe: 60 (9%)
- Pakistan: 45 (7%)
- Albania: 45 (7%)
