- European Council conclusions on the external aspects of migration (23 May 2016). The council also adopted conclusions on:
- EU Regional strategy for Syria and Iraq outlining priorities in working to achieve lasting peace, stability, security in Syria, Iraq and the wider region; and
- EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia to disrupt the business model of human smugglers and trafficking networks and to contribute to broader security in support of the legitimate Libyan authorities.
- European Commission has awarded €56 million in emergency funding to Greece to improve conditions for migrants and strengthen the registration and asylum process and €47 million to Turkey towards strengthen migration management and to support education of Syrian refugees.
- European Council adopted Commission proposal on next steps towards lifting of temporary internal border controls (12 May 2016).

- IOM Update: An estimated 204,311 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 31 May, arriving in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain. Deaths 2,443.
- Eurostat: Almost 90,000 unaccompanied minors among asylum seekers registered in the EU in 2015
- Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA): Monthly Overview (May 2016) of the fundamental rights situation of people arriving in those Member States that have been particularly affected by large migration movements and thematic focus on trafficking.
- Frontext update: The number of migrants arriving on the Greek islands in April plunged by 90% compared to the previous month, reaching fewer than 2,700. The drop is a associated with several factors, including the EU-Turkey agreement and stricter border policies applied by the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia at its border with Greece.

- Justice and Home Affairs Council (21 April 2016) adopted a directive on EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) and a directive on strengthening the rights of children in criminal proceedings. See meeting outcomes for more details.
- European Commission proposed visa-free travel for citizens of Ukraine.
- European Commission proposal to reform the Common European Asylum System (CEAS).
- European Commission has adopted a Communication on Stronger and
Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security. The Communication proposed improvements to existing and future information systems to enhance both external border management and internal security in the EU. The European Commission also presented a revised proposal for a Regulation on the establishment of an Entry-Exit System to speed-up, facilitate and reinforce border check procedures for non-EU nationals travelling to the
EU. - EU-Turkey Agreement came into effect on 4 April 2016. The implementation of the agreement sees the return of irregular migrants from the Greek islands to Turkey and resettlement of Syrian refugees from Turkey to Europe.
- European Commission has awarded €1.14 million in emergency assistance to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to set up an Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration scheme for Italy.
