The Council of the European Union and European Parliament together with the European Commission have agreed that the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) will be transformed into a new European Union Agency for Asylum.
The Agency will have a reserve of 500 experts from Member States and a reinforced mandate.
It is intended that the Agency will contribute to more efficient asylum systems, improved assistance upon request, high-quality decision making, improved monitoring and reporting as well as capacity building in non-EU countries to make the overall EU migration management system more efficient and sustainable.
The establishment of a new EU Agency for Asylum is a key initiative of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. The agreement is the second legislative agreement on proposals made in the Pact.
The agreement needs to be formally endorsed by both the Council and European Parliament. Once the new regulation has entered into force, the European Asylum Support Office will become the European Union Agency for Asylum.
