Upcoming webinar- National statuses for migrants in need of protection: Ireland and the EU

18 May 2020

An EMN Ireland/ESRI webinar

Hosted by EMN Ireland, located within the ESRI, this webinar will present the findings of a new EU-wide, European Migration Network (EMN) study on national statuses for people in need of protection. The study finds that 20 Member States plus Norway have at least one national protection status in place, in addition to refugee and subsidiary protection statuses harmonised at EU level. National protection statuses are issued for a wide variety of needs and situations, such as for humanitarian reasons, serious health conditions, non-refoulement, and environmental disasters in the country of origin.

This webinar will also consider the Irish report to the EU-wide study published in January 2020. In Ireland, increased numbers of migrants in need of protection have been offered residence under national law and new resettlement schemes in recent years, which complement refugee and subsidiary protection status provided for under EU and international law.

The Director of the Irish Refugee and Protection Programme, tasked with receiving up to 2,900 people in need of protection over the next 4 years, will provide an update, and Head of Office of UNHCR Ireland will reflect on protection-related challenges arising from Covid-19.
